The Senate on Monday confirmed Markwayne Mullin to serve as the next head of the Department of Homeland Security, placing the first-term Republican in charge of a sprawling agency facing mounting operational and political challenges.
Mullin was approved in a 54–45 vote that largely followed party lines.
All Republicans except Rand Paul voted in favor of the nomination. Two Democrats — John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich — broke with their party to support Mullin.
Paul’s opposition had been expected following a tense confirmation hearing, where he clashed with Mullin over past comments and questioned claims Mullin made about undertaking “special missions” on behalf of the U.S. government during his time in the House.
Mullin also faced scrutiny from Democrats on the committee over those claims and other aspects of his record.
