So much for allies.
During Wednesday night’s Hannity, Fox News host Sean Hannity said, “NATO is finished” after the supposed U.S. allies decided against assisting President Trump in securing the Strait of Hormuz.
“To put it bluntly, NATO is nothing without the U.S.,” Hannity said. “And yet, when we ask for a relatively small show of support, our allies — and this is to secure their energy needs, not ours — many of these European countries are appalled that Donald Trump would even ask. Why didn’t they volunteer? What happened to the European countries that fought with us?” Hannity asked.
Earlier in the day, speaking during an Oval Office meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin as part of St. Patrick’s Day engagements, Trump framed the Strait of Hormuz as a test of the transatlantic alliance.
“I’ve long said that I wonder whether or not NATO would ever be there for us. So this was a great test,” Trump said.
He argued the U.S. had already carried the burden by striking Iran’s nuclear capabilities, suggesting NATO should have stepped in more visibly.
“We don’t need them, but they should have been there,” Trump said. “Very important.”
Meanwhile, only 2% of American oil goes through the Strait of Hormuz — the EU, on the other hand, relies heavily on the passage for its energy.
