President Trump warned that New York is headed in the wrong direction after a slate of socialist candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a series of victories in Democratic primaries Tuesday night.
“Many Communists running in badly failing Blue States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The votes seem to have them doing quite well against each other. The bad news is that history has conclusively shown that the downtrodden States that they will soon be running will ONLY GET WORSE.”

Trump’s remarks came after a bruising night for establishment Democrats in New York, where several candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America notched major victories that are likely to send them to higher office in heavily Democratic districts.
State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez cruised to victory over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, while former Mamdani campaign staffer Darializa Avila Chevalier pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the night by defeating five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Because both districts strongly favor Democrats, the primary victories are widely viewed as a near-certain path to Congress, potentially adding two more Democratic Socialists of America members to the House when the 120th Congress convenes in January.
Currently, only two sitting members of Congress belong to the DSA: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.
Both Valdez and Avila Chevalier campaigned on strongly anti-Israel platforms, backing efforts to divest from Israeli companies and halt U.S. weapons sales to Israel.
Valdez has also supported policies that would allow greater government intervention in landlord-owned property, while Avila Chevalier has argued that criminal illegal immigrants should not be deported and has drawn criticism for declining to condemn Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack against Israel.
The victories extended beyond congressional races.
New York’s DSA chapter appeared poised to expand its influence in Albany after seven of its eight endorsed candidates were projected to win their state legislative primaries, potentially increasing the organization’s ranks in the state legislature from nine members to 14.
Meanwhile, Mamdani further cemented his growing influence over New York Democratic politics after former city Comptroller Brad Lander — another candidate critical of Israel — defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in the race for New York’s 10th Congressional District by roughly a two-to-one margin.
Trump was especially eager to celebrate Goldman’s defeat.
Goldman served as lead counsel during Trump’s first impeachment proceedings in 2019 and has remained one of the president’s most outspoken critics in Congress.
“Weak and pathetic Congressman Dan Goldman just lost, BIG!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I guess people didn’t like him illegally targeting President TRUMP. In any event, this jerk is finally GONE!”
