According to a Fox News report, a Georgia judge has rejected a request for a new trial from Jose Ibarra, the man convicted in the killing of nursing student Laken Riley.
Patrick Haggard, a Superior Court judge in Georgia, denied Ibarra’s motion, leaving intact his sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Ibarra was convicted on multiple charges tied to Riley’s death, including malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, hindering a 911 call, tampering with evidence, and peeping tom.
The decision means the verdict and sentence handed down after the trial remain unchanged.
Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was killed while jogging near the campus of University of Georgia in 2024, a case that drew national attention and intensified debate over immigration policy and public safety.
With the motion denied, Ibarra’s convictions and life sentence remain in place, though he could still pursue appeals through higher courts.
