President Trump challenged Democratic lawmakers during his State of the Union address Tuesday night, pressing them to publicly back his admin’s immigration stance that protecting American citizens must come before illegal migrants.

And no one was surprised by what the Democrats decided to do.

“One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe,” Trump said. “So tonight, I’m inviting every legislator to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle. If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

Republicans, led by Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), rose to their feet, while Democrats remained seated.

Cameras captured Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) remaining seated as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) heckled the president.

“You have killed Americans,” Omar shouted, calling Trump a “murderer” as Republicans cheered.

“Isn’t that a shame?” Trump replied before rebuking Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), telling them they “should be ashamed” for not standing.

After order was restored, Trump urged Congress to pass legislation overriding state and local sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The president also called for “serious penalties for public officials who block the removal of criminal aliens — in many cases drug lords, murderers — all over our country.”

“They’re blocking the removal of these people out of our country and you should be ashamed of yourselves,” Trump told Democrats.

Tlaib, seated beside Omar, wore a pin reading “F–k ICE,” signaling opposition to the administration’s immigration enforcement agenda.

Immigration enforcement and sanctuary-city conflicts are a defining legislative battle heading into the current session of Congress, with multiple GOP proposals targeting local non-cooperation policies.
