President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that U.S. Space Command headquarters will relocate from Colorado Springs, Colo., to Huntsville, AL.

“I am thrilled to report that the U.S. Space Command headquarters will move to the beautiful locale of a place called Huntsville, Alabama, forever to be known from this point forward as Rocket City,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

The president said the move would bolster U.S. defense in “the high frontier” and noted Huntsville already hosts NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. He added that the headquarters will play a key role in developing his “Golden Dome” integrated missile defense program.

Trump argued the decision restores his administration’s original plan, which he said was “wrongfully obstructed” by former President Joe Biden, who in 2023 ordered the command remain in Colorado.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), appearing with Trump, said the Alabama site would save about $480 million compared to the Colorado location.
