Vice President JD Vance pointed to the migrant surge overwhelming Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta and offered a blunt message: America could have looked the same.
“Thank God @POTUS was elected and our country’s border no longer looks like this,” Vance wrote Friday.
“These images out of Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration and the radical left-wing globalist policies that have enabled the Invasion of the West.”
Vance shared video posted by Fox News border correspondent Bill Melugin showing crowds scaling fences, swimming ashore and running through the streets of the Spanish territory.
Melugin described the arrivals as overwhelmingly military-age men rather than families seeking asylum.
Ceuta sits on the North African coast and shares a land border with Morocco. Although surrounded by Moroccan territory, the city belongs to Spain and serves as an external border of the European Union.
The situation had been building for days before exploding Thursday.
Spanish officials said roughly 50,000 people entered Ceuta in a single mass movement, although about half had returned to Morocco by Friday, according to El País.
At least 41 people reportedly died during the crossings.
Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas asked Madrid to declare a national emergency and take unified control of the response. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government rejected that request, saying Spanish civil-protection law doesn’t treat migration flows as the type of disaster covered by the emergency mechanism.
Madrid still deployed military personnel to support police and border authorities.
Sánchez has defended his immigration policies and blamed trafficking networks for the crisis. His government also rejected claims that Spain’s recent migrant regularization program caused the surge.
Vance wasn’t buying that defense.
His post tied the chaos directly to a larger argument the Trump Administration has made about Western governments: Weak enforcement invites more illegal crossings, while aggressive deterrence stops them.
