Jones calls the DSA platform “literally insane.”
CNN commentator and longtime progressive activist Van Jones is drawing a line in the sand — and he’s doing it against members of his own side.
In a weekend social media post, Jones declared that some activists associated with the Democratic Socialists of America are pushing ideas that have little to do with traditional progressive politics and warned that frustrated Democrats may be letting those positions creep into the party unchecked.
“I’m a strong Democrat, with a winning bipartisan track record,” Jones wrote on X. He pointed to causes he has championed for decades, including criminal justice reform, Medicare for All, free education, and environmental initiatives.
Then came the pivot.
“But some people in groups like the DSA are pushing an agenda FAR outside those ideals,” Jones wrote. “Supporting Hamas is not progressive.”
He continued by arguing that slogans such as “no police, no prisons, no borders” fall outside the progressive movement he identifies with, adding that celebrating the killing of Israeli civilians should not be considered part of a legitimate left-wing agenda.
“These ideas are REGRESSIVE,” Jones wrote.
The warning comes as Democratic Socialists continue to notch victories in Democratic primaries around the country. The DSA has publicly celebrated multiple congressional primary wins during the 2026 cycle, fueling a broader debate about whether the party’s activist wing is gaining influence over Democratic politics.
Jones suggested some of those ideas are being quietly folded into the party while rank-and-file Democrats remain focused on battles with Republicans and internal frustrations with party leadership.
“Right now, extremists are trying to sneak backwards proposals into our party, hoping mainstream Democrats are too frustrated with MAGA and the Democratic Party establishment to notice,” he wrote. “But we see you.”
The longtime Democratic strategist and commentator framed his criticism as a defense of a “big tent” party rather than a rejection of progressive politics itself. But he left little doubt about where he believes the line should be drawn.
“Yes, we want our Democratic Party to be a big tent,” Jones wrote. “But we don’t need party poopers.”
“So STOP pooping in the punch bowl — and telling us the turds are ice cubes. They aren’t. And we are smart enough to know the difference.”
