Maryland Gov. Wes Moore broke from his usual criticism of President Donald Trump this week, praising the administration’s newly launched Trump Accounts program as a meaningful step toward reducing child poverty and narrowing the racial wealth gap.
Speaking Tuesday on political commentator Clay Cane’s show, the Democratic governor said the policy deserves bipartisan recognition—even if he isn’t thrilled with its branding.
“I will give this administration credit for this,” Moore said.
“We’ve had Democratic presidents, Republican presidents, who have not been able to get this done. And it actually got done. This is actually a smart policy.”
Moore then took a swipe at Trump’s penchant for putting his name on major initiatives before returning to praise the substance of the proposal.
“I hate the fact that he called it a Trump Account. Like why he put his name on this thing is so unbelievably frustrating—and he put his name on everything,” Moore said.
“But that’s just who the man is and that’s who he has been his whole life.”
“But on a policy perspective, this is a good thing!”
Moore said he believes the accounts could become a useful tool for expanding financial opportunity.
“I am focused on ending child poverty, and I’m focused on ending the racial wealth gap, and this is actually an important tool to move towards doing both,” he said.
His comments came just one day after the nationwide rollout of the program.
Trump Accounts were established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Republican tax-and-spending package signed into law by President Trump.
Under the program, every eligible child born between 2025 and 2028 receives a federally funded $1,000 investment account.
The money is invested in low-cost index funds designed to track the broader U.S. stock market.
Parents or guardians can contribute up to $5,000 annually, while employers may contribute an additional $2,500 per year, allowing the accounts to grow tax-free over time.
When beneficiaries reach age 18, the funds may continue to be invested or used for qualifying purposes such as higher education expenses, starting a business, or a down payment on a home, subject to the program’s rules.
For Moore, the policy’s potential outweighed his objections to its name.
“This is actually a smart policy,” he concluded.
