DARK DAYS: Cuba Suffers Yet Another Nationwide Grid Failure

posted by Hannity Staff - 7.06.26

Cuba was plunged into darkness Monday after another island-wide blackout knocked out power across the communist nation, the latest sign of a worsening energy crisis fueled by chronic fuel shortages and a collapsing electrical grid.

The state-run Electric Union announced on X that the nationwide outage struck Monday and said the cause remains under investigation. Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines said emergency protocols have been activated in an effort to restore electricity.

The blackout comes as Cuba’s energy system continues to buckle under severe fuel shortages. The island has struggled to secure enough oil imports after President Donald Trump warned earlier this year that countries supplying oil to Cuba could face U.S. tariffs, adding fresh pressure to Havana’s already fragile economy.

Cuba produces only about 40% of the fuel it consumes and relies heavily on imports. A shipment of roughly 730,000 barrels of Russian oil delivered in late March was reportedly exhausted by the end of April, leaving the government scrambling to keep power plants operating.

The shortages have rippled through nearly every aspect of daily life. Public transportation has been severely curtailed, officials have canceled tens of thousands of surgeries, and rolling blackouts lasting more than 24 hours have become commonplace in many parts of the country.

Monday’s outage follows a string of major grid failures. A nationwide blackout struck Cuba in March, while another large-scale outage hit the island’s eastern provinces in May, underscoring the deteriorating condition of the country’s aging electrical infrastructure.
