A German soccer fan arrived in the United States expecting danger. He left fighting back tears over the kindness of complete strangers.

Sebastian Kraus traveled to America for the World Cup after years of hearing overseas reports about shootings, crime, and an unsafe country. But during an emotional interview with NBC 10 Boston, Kraus said the America he found bore little resemblance to the one he’d seen portrayed in the media.

“I fall in love with this country and this was so emotional, I even cried in the stadium,” Kraus said, pausing several times to wipe away tears with his Germany jersey.

Germany’s tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion with a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to Paraguay in the Round of 32. Yet Kraus said the memories he’ll carry home have little to do with soccer.

Reporter Oscar Margáin noted that Kraus “never imagined his trip to America would be so emotional.” Footage from the interview showed the German fan struggling to compose himself as he described the generosity he encountered throughout his stay.

“To be honest, I was a bit scared or had a fear to travel to the United States,” Kraus admitted. “News about shootings and criminals and that the country’s not safe.”

Instead, he said, he found welcoming strangers eager to help.

One of the moments that stayed with him came after Boston residents picked him up and drove him to his hotel. Kraus said he was so moved by the unexpected act of kindness that he replayed the video from his phone over and over.

“America is great,” he said.

Kraus also pushed back against stereotypes on both sides of the Atlantic.

“Americans are not rude. Germans are not rude,” he said. “If we are together, we can achieve great things.”

His emotional testimony quickly resonated online, offering a reminder that personal experience can sometimes tell a very different story from the headlines.
