House Speaker Mike Johnson has seen the Senate’s bipartisan border bill — and he’s not happy. Johnson shared his reaction on X shortly after text of the bill was made public.
Johnson says it’s “worse than expected.”
“I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, ‘the border never closes.’ If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival.”

Despite Johnson’s negative reaction, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to advance a vote on the bill sometime this week.
“The priorities in this bill are too important to ignore and too vital to allow politics to get in the way,” Schumer said in a statement. “The United States and our allies are facing multiple, complex and, in places, coordinated challenges from adversaries who seek to disrupt democracy and expand authoritarian influence around the globe.”
Johnson appeared on Meet the Press over the weekend to reinforce that President Joe Biden is the person to blame for the border “catastrophe.”
“He doesn’t need Congress —he could do it right now but he’s unwilling to do it.”
