On The Hill

WATCH NOW: Marco Rubio Faces Senate Foreign Relations Committee for Sec. of State Confirmation Hearing

Former Florida Senator Marco Rubio is on Capitol Hill on Wednesday facing tough questions from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee over his Secretary of State nomination.

Rubio is widely considered to be one of Trump’s safer Cabinet picks.

Outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Rubio during a recent interview.

“I’ve had really good conversations with Sen. Rubio, soon to be Secretary Rubio, and he is someone who is deeply steeped in these issues — longtime service on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on the Intelligence Committee,” Blinken said. “He knows the issues well, he’s very thoughtful about them. And I believe — but I don’t want to speak for him, I certainly don’t want to damn him with praise — that he’s someone who understands the imperative of American engagement and American leadership.”

“Prudence in the conduct of foreign policy is not an abandonment of our values,” Rubio said in his opening remarks. “It’s the commonsense understanding that while we remain the wealthiest and the most powerful nation on the Earth, our wealth has never been unlimited … Placing our core national interest above all else is not isolation.” It is a “commonsense realization”, he added.

“While America has far too often prioritized the global order above national interest, other nations continue to act as they will,” he also said. “Nations proceed in their own best interest.”
