Virginia Shows Zero Tolerance for Students Skipping School to Protest ICE

Virginia is not messing around when it comes to education and a zero tolerance for imposing on law enforcement. More than 300 students at Woodbridge High School have been suspended after leaving campus during a student-organized protest against federal immigration enforcement last week, according to reports.

Principal Dr. Heather Abney informed parents that 303 students received three-day suspensions for walking out of class last Friday to “express their views” regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a letter obtained by 7 News, Abney explained that the demonstration was not sanctioned by Prince William County Public Schools.

What began as a campus protest extended beyond school property, with large numbers of students moving into nearby streets. Local law enforcement was called in to direct traffic and monitor the situation as hundreds of students left school grounds.

In her letter, Abney acknowledged that student walkouts can serve as a way for young people to speak out on matters “important to them.” However, she emphasized that departing campus during instructional hours without authorization violates district policy.

Reports indicate that some participants returned home following the protest, while others gathered at a nearby shopping center. Several students eventually came back to campus, where a small number reportedly created a disturbance.

“We appreciate your partnership as we continue to prioritize student safety while maintaining clear expectations for appropriate conduct during the school day,” Abney wrote.

Despite the disciplinary action, organizers are preparing for another district-wide walkout scheduled for Friday. A student-run Instagram account promoting efforts to “abolish” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has encouraged participation.

One post, published about a week ago, assured students that administrators were aware of the planned demonstration and claimed participation would not lead to punishment.

“Welcome to Prince William County Schools ICE OUT,” the post stated, adding that “It’s time to take a stand.”

“As the walkout happening on Friday, February 20th will be county wide, it’s important to understand every campus has slightly different layouts and procedures, please stay alert for detailed instructions from us and your local student organizers regarding specific meetup spots,” the message continued.

“Rest assured that all school administrations have been informed of our plans, so participating will not get you in trouble. Lastly, please share this post to your stories to help us spread the word, let’s make sure every school is represented!”

The account, known as pwcs_iceout, also clarified that the protest was not “approved or endorsed” by the district. Organizers advised students to bring signs, remain peaceful, and stay on school grounds during the demonstration.
