UPDATE: Trump Says US Will Support UK After Iranian Aggression, Cites Historical Relationship

posted by Hannity Staff - 7.19.19

President Trump pledged to support the United Kingdom Friday following Iran’s hostile actions in the Straits of Hormuz; saying the US and UK don’t have a “written agreement” but a “long-standing” special relationship.

“As you know, we have a very close alliance with the UK, and we always have… We have a lot of warships there, we’ll talk to the UK. We have no written agreement, but we have an agreement. They’ve been a very great ally of ours,” said President Trump.

“We have no written agreement, but I think we have an agreement which is long standing,” he added.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed Friday to have seized a British-based oil tanker in the Straits of Hormuz; escalating tensions with the US and UK just one day after the American military destroyed an Iranian drone operating in the region.

“The UK ministry of defence said it was urgently looking into what had happened to the Stena Impero, a 30,000 tonne British-flagged ship, which was heading for Saudi Arabia when it abruptly left the international sea lanes through the strait of Hormuz and tracking data showed it heading north towards the Iranian island of Qeshm, where the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has a substantial base,” reports the Guardian.

“The Revolutionary Guards issued a statement saying they had seized the Stena Impero, citing international maritime law for their action,” adds the newspaper. “The British government said it was ‘assessing the situation following reports of an incident in the Gulf.’”

President Trump confirmed Thursday that the US military shot-down an Iranian un-manned drone operating over the Straits of Hormuz; saying the Islamic Republic takes “hostile actions” on a routine basis.

“The drone was immediately destroyed,” Trump said. “This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in international waters.”

Trump said the USS Boxer destroyed the aircraft after it flew within 1,000 yards, “ignoring multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship’s crew.”

“The incident marked the latest escalation of tensions between the two sides. Iran last month shot down a U.S. surveillance drone that it claimed was flying over Iranian airspace, which nearly prompted a retaliatory strike,” reports the Hill.
