TRUMP EFFECT: Illegal Crossings Along Southern Border Plummet to Lowest Since 1970

The border just hit a milestone Democrats swore was impossible.

Illegal crossings along the U.S.–Mexico border have fallen to their lowest level in more than half a century, new federal data show — a sharp turnaround credited to President Trump’s hardline enforcement policies.

According to internal DHS statistics obtained by CBS News, Border Patrol agents recorded roughly 238,000 apprehensions in fiscal year 2025 — the fewest since 1970, when the total was about 202,000.

That’s a stunning reversal from the 2.2 million apprehensions logged in 2022 under Joe Biden — nearly ten times higher than today’s figure.

The report notes that more than 60% of this year’s arrests occurred in Biden’s final months, underscoring the shift after Trump’s sweeping clampdown began in January.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has enforced new deportation protocols, expanded physical barriers, surged National Guard deployments, and tightened asylum rules. The result: fewer than 9,000 crossings per month, compared to entire days during the Biden era that saw that many arrests.

September’s total was just 8,400 — up slightly from August’s 6,300 but still near record lows.

For an issue that once defined national chaos, the numbers now tell a different story: the southern border is finally under control.

After years of crisis headlines, Trump delivered what Washington couldn’t — results.
