A fed-up garbage truck driver became the latest face of the growing tensions outside Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center after demonstrators blocked him from doing his job during another chaotic night of protests.
Video from Wednesday night showed the visibly frustrated driver confronting anti-ICE protesters who had obstructed his path outside the facility.
“If I hit one of y’all, I go to jail,” the driver shouted. “What’s wrong with ya all?”
The driver, who works for Elizabeth-based Regional Industries, repeatedly pleaded with demonstrators to clear the way so he could continue his route.
“Come on man,” he yelled before climbing back into his truck.
After a tense standoff, the driver appeared to prevail. Footage showed him returning to his vehicle and eventually driving away.
Video from the scene showed protesters facing off with federal immigration agents as authorities attempted to keep roads and facility entrances clear. Some demonstrators erected makeshift barricades and used traffic cones while agents worked to push crowds back from access points around the facility.
