'THIS IS WHO DEMOCRATS ARE': NYT Op-Ed Calls for Abolishing the Senate, Ending Electoral College, Packing the Court

All in the name of Democracy, right?

Conservatives on X unloaded this week after a New York Times op-ed guest called for the abolishing of the Senate, the electoral college, and packing the SCOTUS.

This excerpt is from the description for the NYT’s interview podcast Interesting Times; the guest, Osita Nwanevu, is calling for a new Constitution.

After the great rebuke of 2024, many Democrats seem to think their party needs to become more moderate. But there’s another theory potent on the American left that believes Donald Trump’s election shows not just that American democracy is in danger, but that it doesn’t really work at all. What the country needs isn’t just a new policy agenda; it might need the kind of constitutional revolution — from adding new states, to packing the Supreme Court — that some Democrats already flirted with under Joe Biden.

That’s the kind of argument that my guest today, Osita Nwanevu, makes in his new book, “The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding.” Nwanevu is a contributing editor at The New Republic and the Democratic Institutions fellow at the Roosevelt Institute.

Conservatives were quick to share the interview on X — many pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of a news organization that calls President Trump a threat to Democracy.

The Times’ op-ed section has been a lightning rod for controversy lately, with another piece seemingly calling for a military coup against President Trump.

“The New York Times is pro-military coup against President Trump. What a flaming pile of trash in The Times, written by former Obama NSC officials Steven Simon and Jonathan Stevenson,” Steve Guest said on X.
