THE SWAMP PROTECTS ITS OWN: Sussmann Skates, Clinton Lawyer Cleared of Lying to FBI

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.31.22

A Washington D.C. jury has cleared former Clinton lawyer Michael Sussmann of all charges on Tuesday morning; he was suspected of lying to the FBI during a September 2016 meeting with former FBI general counsel James Baker.

Sussmann was accused of passing off information about the now-debunked Trump-Russia hoax. According to The Daily Wire, “Sussmann pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing that he never lied to the FBI, and even if he did, the lie did not impact the FBI’s operations at all.”

From The Daily Wire…

[Special Counsel John Durham] alleged in Sussmann’s charging documents that the cybersecurity attorney intentionally misrepresented himself to gain an audience with Baker. Sussmann told the then-FBI lawyer that he was coming to the bureau as a good citizen, when in reality Sussmann was passing shaky opposition research on behalf of his clients: the Clinton campaign and tech executive Rodney Joffe.

Sussmann gave Baker later debunked evidence of a secret backchannel between the Trump Organization and Russia’s Alfa Bank. The FBI agents tasked with looking into the matter dismissed the data and Sussmann’s claims within a matter of days of investigating the probe.

Baker said during testimony that he is “100% confident” that Sussmann hid his clients during their September 19, 2016 meeting. Sussmann’s defense attorneys pointed out that Baker has made several conflicting statements about his recollection of the meeting before, however.

GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee shared the story on Twitter, slamming the swamp for protecting its own.

“The Swamp always protects its own,” the tweet said.

Sussmann provided some remarks following the verdict.

“I told the truth to the FBI, and the Jury clearly recognized this in their unanimous verdict today,” he said. “I’m grateful to the members of the jury for their careful thoughtful service. Despite being falsely accused I believe that Justice ultimately prevailed in my case. As you can imagine this has been a difficult year for my family and me. But right now we are grateful for the love and support of so many during this ordeal.”
