An erroneous Reuters report said the tariffs would start March 1st…
During Friday’s White House press briefing, press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that significant tariffs would be implemented against Canada, Mexico, and China starting this Saturday, February 1st.
“The president will be implementing tomorrow 25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada, and a 10% tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country,” Leavitt said at a White House press briefing.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will respond to the tariffs. Trudeau, speaking to an advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations, said the country was at a critical moment.
“We’re ready with a response – a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response. It’s not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act,” he said in televised remarks, adding that all options were on the table.
Canada sends 75% of all its goods and services exports to the United States, and the economy will be badly hit by Trump’s tariffs.
