While delivering a speech to the National Republican Congressional Committee Wednesday night at the National Building Museum in D.C., President Trump warned “rebel” Republicans about badmouthing Trump’s tariff strategy.
“And then I see some rebel Republican, some guy who wants to grandstand, say, ‘I think that Congress should take over negotiations.’ Let me tell you, you don’t negotiate like I negotiate,” Trump said.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) is leading a bipartisan effort to block former President Trump from imposing new tariffs and to return that authority to Congress. “I don’t like the thought of waging a trade war with the entire world,” Bacon told reporters Tuesday.
In the Senate, Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are spearheading a bipartisan resolution to repeal Trump’s global tariffs.
Meanwhile, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have introduced a bill requiring the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of imposing new tariffs. The bill would also require congressional approval within 60 days, or the tariffs would expire.
“I just saw it today, a couple of your congressmen,” Trump said before launching into an impression of a lawmaker. “‘Sir, I think we should get involved in the negotiation of the tariffs.’ Oh, that’s what I need, I need some guy telling me how to negotiate.”
Trump said that should Congress take over tariff negotiations, China would be “the happiest people in the world.”
“They wouldn’t be paying 104%,” Trump said of China. “I’d say they’d be paying no percent — we’d be paying them 104%.”
