Israel Del Toro: A Hero Left Defenseless by the Polis Gun Ban
Sergeant Israel Del Toro was engulfed in flames in 2005 after his Humvee was struck by an IED in Afghanistan. Although he managed to escape the wreckage, Mr. Del Toro suffered severe burns over 80% of his body, the loss of one hand and most of the fingers on the other, and doctors predicted a mere 15% chance of survival.
Yet, he trudged forth, endured years of painful surgeries and rehabilitation, and went on to become the first 100% disabled veteran ever to re-enlist in the U.S. Air Force. He served our country for nine more years, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant.
That’s how deeply Mr. Del Toro loves this country. He was not only willing to burn alive for the freedoms we cherish, but volunteered to continue serving us after previously doing so nearly killed him.
That’s why we find it rather insulting that Governor Jared Polis’s new gun ban and permit-to-purchase regime in Senate Bill 25-003 strips Mr. Del Toro of his right to keep and bear arms.
Because of his injuries, Del Toro depends on AR-platform firearms with stabilizing braces and specialized triggers. These tools allow him to safely and effectively operate a firearm for self-defense.
But in addition to burying Mr. Del Toro’s ability to purchase AR-platform pistols under mountains of red tape and fees, the Polis Gun Ban further classifies the specialized triggers he relies on as “dangerous weapons.” This means Colorado law views Mr. Del Toro’s use of these triggers as a felony offense — turning a wounded veteran into a criminal for exercising his constitutional right to bear arms.
Israel Del Toro gave everything and more for this country. He should not have to fight again for his right to defend himself at home. Yet that’s exactly what the Polis Gun Ban forces him to do.
