SCHUMER SHIELDING MAYORKAS: Cruz Says Senate Leader Burying Impeachment Against DHS Secretary

posted by Hannity Staff - 3.04.24

In a recent op-ed for The National Review, Lone Star State Senator Ted Cruz unloaded on Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for attempting to bury the impeachment of DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas.

“By all indications, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is planning to bury the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and attempting to do so without ever holding a trial,” Cruz wrote. “The House of Representatives impeached the sitting cabinet secretary on February 13 for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and his breach of the public trust. Now, Mayorkas is only the second cabinet officer in U.S. history to be impeached.”

“History and precedence are important here. In our over 200 years of history, the House has sent impeachment articles to the Senate 21 times,” Cruz continued. “In every instance without a jurisdictional issue or a resignation before trial, the Senate has adjudicated the matter and senators have gone on record with a vote of guilty or innocent.”

“While the House has fulfilled its responsibility to hold high-ranking officials accountable for their conduct, Senate Democrats want none of it. Senate leadership and the White House are already justifying their refusal to hold a trial on the charges by claiming that the impeachment itself was nothing more than a political stunt and predicated on mere policy differences that the Republican-led House has with the Biden administration’s immigration policies.”

Republicans aren’t confident that impeachment will be taken up in the Senate. Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., recently told reporters that “It’ll fail in the Senate.”

“If I could use the House term: It’ll be dead on arrival when it comes over,” he said.

But there is a growing number of Senators who are “demanding” a trial.

Last week, a group of Republican senators led by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, called on Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to “demand” a Senate trial. It was conveyed in a letter signed by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., Rick Scott, R-Fla., Ron Johnson, R-Wis., JD Vance, R-Ohio, Roger Marshall, R-Kan., Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Mike Braun, R-Ind., Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., Ted Budd, R-N.C., Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.
