On the hill on Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson hammered home that the government is shut down because of the Democrats — and Chuck Schumer’s fear of losing his job.
Johnson held up an old edition of the Washington Examiner magazine from March 2025 in which Chuck Schumer is depicted being chased off by Democrats as an “enemy of Democracy.”
“Why is he an enemy of Democracy? Because the far-left base in the Democratic Party has turned on Chuck Schumer because he did the responsible thing and kept the lights on [in March] … and Schumer doesn’t want to be in this situation again,” Johnson said.
“So he got his staff together and the far-left wing of the party and said, ‘What do you want?’ And they decided that they would pick a fight on healthcare,” Johnson continued.
Johnson said the Democrats own the shutdown and “Chuck Schumer is scrambling” because none of the Democratic Party policies are very popular — so he clung to healthcare.
“He decided to claim to all of you that that is the issue with government funding — it is not. They are two entirely different things,” Johnson said.
