The NYPD confirmed this week the disbanding of their elite Plainclothes Unit; a historic squad fundamental in cleaning up the New York streets during the 1970s and 1980s when the murder rate was nearly 8 times higher than today.
“The New York police commissioner announced on Monday that he was disbanding the Police Department’s anti-crime units: plainclothes teams that target violent crime and have been involved in some of the city’s most notorious police shootings,” reports the New York Times.
“This is a seismic shift in the culture of how the N.Y.P.D. polices this great city,” Commissioner Shea said. “It will be felt immediately in the communities that we protect.”
“This is 21st-century policing,” Mr. Shea said of his decision to disband the units. “The key difference — we must do it in a manner that builds trust between the officers and the community they serve.”

Rioters smashed windows and looted stores in Manhattan late Sunday night after assembling for citywide protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis; a situation Mayor Bill de Blasio described as “limited protest activity.”
“Fox News crews on the scene in SoHo reported hundreds of people stealing from luxury stores – including Chanel and Dior – for hours on Sunday night going into the early hours of Monday morning. The looters were seen piling shoplifted merchandise into vehicles while others rode off with the merchandise in black garbage bags balanced on CitiBikes,” reports Fox news.

“Most of the day we had large crowds throughout the city in multiple boroughs [on Sunday]. But when it got dark, things changed and it changed rapidly,” Shea said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” on Monday morning. “We anticipated it, but you saw large groups of people had no inclination to all this protest once it got dark, particularly in the area of SoHo between Canal and West Broadway. We had a number of stores broken into.”
