The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday morning condemning socialism, with several Democrats crossing the aisle to rebuke “socialist policies” gaining ground in the U.S. following the election of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
The measure passed 285–98, with 86 Democrats joining Republicans. Two Democrats — Reps. Deborah Ross of Pennsylvania and Janelle Bynum of Oregon — voted present. In a notable move, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who endorsed Mamdani days before the election, also voted in favor.
Introduced by Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL), the resolution outlines the historic failures of socialism, naming regimes under Castro in Cuba, Mao in China, and Maduro in Venezuela, citing famine, oppression, and mass murder.
The text reads: “Resolved by the House of Representatives that Congress denounces socialism in all its forms and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.”

While nonbinding, the rebuke lands at a pivotal moment. Progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continue pushing greater government control over healthcare and education, while Mamdani, a self-described socialist, prepares to meet with President Donald Trump on Friday.
The vote signals rising resistance to socialism — and a growing willingness to say so publicly.
Socialism has NO PLACE in America 🇺🇸
Today, House Republicans were PROUD to support a measure REJECTING socialism and all the lies of socialists.

Mamdani is set to sit down with President Trump on Friday; the POTUS posted about the meeting this week.
“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!” Trump shared on TRUTH Social.
Mamdani says he has “many disagreements” with Trump but is willing to set those differences aside for the sake of his city.
“I intend to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If an agenda hurts New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say something,” Mamdani said Thursday at a press conference.
“I know that for tens of thousands of New Yorkers, this meeting is between two very different candidates who they voted for, for the same reason,” he added. “They wanted a leader who would take on the cost-of-living crisis that makes it impossible for working people to afford living in this city.”
