According to the Associated Press, over 600 U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) employees reported being locked out of the agency’s computer systems overnight. Those still logged in received emails stating that, “at the direction of Agency leadership,” USAID headquarters would be closed to personnel on Monday, Feb. 3.
Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, said during an X Spaces conversation that President Donald Trump agreed that USAID should be shut down. Musk confirmed that the shutdown process is underway.
He said that unlike an apple contaminated by a worm, the agency is “a bowl of worms.”
There is no apple,” he said. “It’s beyond repair.”
“We spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper. Could [have] gone to some great parties. Did that instead,” Musk joked.

When asked about the USAID employees being locked out, President Trump said, “It has been run by a bunch of radical lunatics” and confirmed that he’s cleaning house.
