PRESSING PAUSE: Trump Admin Halts Offshore Wind Projects Due to National Security Concerns [WATCH]

posted by Hannity Staff - 12.22.25

Trump administration officials hit pause on America’s offshore wind build-out Monday, citing national security risks tied to massive turbine projects along the East Coast.

Department of the Interior Doug Burgum announced that, effective immediately, leases for all large-scale offshore wind projects currently under construction in the United States will be paused.

In a press release, the department said the move follows “national security risks” identified by the Department of War in “recently completed classified reports.”

Interior officials said the pause will “give the Department, along with the Department of War and other relevant government agencies, time to work with leaseholders and state partners to assess the possibility of mitigating the national security risks posed by these projects.”

“The prime duty of the United States government is to protect the American people,” Burgum said.

“Today’s action addresses emerging national security risks, including the rapid evolution of the relevant adversary technologies, and the vulnerabilities created by large-scale offshore wind projects with proximity near our east coast population centers,” Burgum added. “The Trump administration will always prioritize the security of the American people.”

The Interior Department said five offshore wind leases will be affected by the pause: Vineyard Wind 1, Revolution Wind, CVOW, Sunrise Wind, and Empire Wind.

Officials also pointed to long-standing concerns raised in unclassified U.S. government reports, which have “long found” that massive turbine blades can create radar interference known as “clutter” — obscuring legitimate moving targets and generating false ones.

A 2024 Department of Energy report found that while radar systems can raise detection thresholds to reduce that clutter, doing so risks causing the radar to “miss actual targets.”

“Today’s action ensures that national security risks posed by offshore wind projects are appropriately addressed and that the United States government retains its ability to effectively defend the American people,” the press release states.
