POLL: 77% of Voters Oppose Allowing Illegal Immigrants to Vote in U.S. Elections

According to a new exclusive poll from America’s New Majority Project, 77% of voters oppose allowing illegal immigrants to vote in a U.S. election, including 60% who strongly oppose it.

Results from the poll below:

6-in-10 voters “strongly oppose” allowing illegal immigrants to vote in U.S. elections.

  • This includes 83% of Republicans, 35% of Democrats, and 63% of independents.
  • Total opposition to allowing illegal immigrants to vote (which includes those who “somewhat oppose”) is 77%, including 90% of Republicans, 61% of Democrats and 80% of independents.
  • Blacks (54%) and Hispanics (63%) have less opposition to allowing illegal immigrants to vote than white (84%) and Asian (71%) voters, but still have a majority opposed.
  • The one demographic in favor of allowing illegal immigrants to vote is Gen Z – with 54% in support and 36% opposed.
  • New Majority voters oppose allowing illegal immigrants to vote in U.S. elections 81% to 15%, compared to Left Minority voters, who oppose 63% to 29%.
  • Opposition is similar when voters are asked specifically about federal, state or local elections.

68% oppose allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local elections after hearing arguments for and against it.

  • 55% “strongly oppose” and “13%” somewhat oppose allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local elections after hearing the cases for and against it. This is a 7-point drop in total opposition to local voting by illegal immigrants.
  • The largest divide is still by age, with Gen Z voters supporting 61% to 30%, but all other age groups opposed. Baby Boomers oppose allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local elections by 82% to 12%.
  • After hearing the case for and against allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local elections, support among Left Minority voters becomes evenly divided, with 44% in support and 45% opposed.
  • New Majority voters remain strongly opposed, 74% to 19%. Sixty-two percent are strongly opposed.

The issue of allowing illegal immigrants to vote could have a major impact on the election.

  • In a hypothetical matchup between a Republican candidate who opposes allowing illegal immigrants to vote and a Democrat in support of it, the Republican wins 56% to 29%.
  • This is a 24-point swing toward the GOP candidate compared to the generic ballot. 15 points of that total swing toward the GOP candidate comes from America’s New Majority voters.
  • The GOP candidate gains with independents (+21), Democrats (+14) and remains the same among Republicans. They also gain among Asian voters (+16), black voters (+14), Hispanic voters (+3), and white voters (+12).
  • The GOP candidate also gains among all age groups, including Gen Z voters (+4) despite their overall support for allowing illegal immigrants to vote.
