Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was released from Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. on Monday after being admitted for two weeks after complications due to cancer surgery.

In a statement, Austin’s doctors said the 70-year-old would continue to work remotely “for a period of time” and undergo physical therapy, but is expected to make a full recovery, The New York Post reports.

“I’m grateful for the excellent care I received at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and want to thank the outstanding doctors and nursing staff for their professionalism and superb support. I also am thankful and appreciative for all the well wishes I received for a speedy recovery,” said Austin.

“Now, as I continue to recuperate and perform my duties from home, I’m eager to fully recover and return as quickly as possible to the Pentagon.”

Austin has drawn fire from both sides of the aisle over the last few weeks for failing to properly communicate he would be unavailable while being treated for his cancer complications. Despite the blowback, the Biden Administration has made it clear they do not intend to fire Austin.
