President Trump didn’t hold back Tuesday, unloading on Canada just moments before meeting newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney — and making it clear he wasn’t there to play nice.
“I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?” Trump posted on TRUTH Social, minutes before their handshake.
The message: America’s done being taken for granted.
I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many…

Carney, meanwhile, has said that he wants to discuss bilateral relations with Trump and see how Canada and the US can work together amid the tariff wars.
“When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations,” Carney said in his victory speech following the Canadian federal election April 28.
During the Oval Office meet with Carney, Trump struck a different tone, stressing that America wants to be friends with Canada; “Regardless of anything, we’re going to be friends with Canada. Canada is a very speccial place,” he said.

Trump also commented on his desire to make Canada the 51st state: “There would be a lot of advantages,” Trump said, adding that he still believes there is a case to be made for Canadian statehood.
“I still believe that, but it takes two to tango. There would be a lot of advantages. When you get rid of that artificial line and look at that beautiful formation, that’s the way it was meant to be,” Trump said.
