Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer continued to deflect growing criticism of her handling of the state’s CoVID-19 outbreak; blaming the spike in new infections on travelers returning from Florida.
“At the end of the day, this is going to come down to whether or not everyone does their part,” Whitmer told “Meet the Press.” “That’s the most important thing. This variant, the B117 variant, is what is growing so quickly in Michigan. We have the second most, I think, after Florida.”
“Michigan and Florida are not next to each other. But this is the time of the year that snow birds come home from Florida, where people are going on spring break, and all of these things can contribute to spread. That’s why we’re imploring people to take this seriously, mask up, get tested,” she said.
From Fox News:
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday urged a suspension of in-person high school classes as the state sees a new spike in coronavirus cases.
The state is the national leader in the number of cases of COVID-19 by population despite increasing vaccinations.
“We all have to step up our game for the next two weeks to bring down rising cases, and that is why I am calling on high schools to voluntarily go remote for the next two weeks past spring break, calling on youth sports to voluntarily suspend games and practices for two weeks,” the governor said during a press conference.
She also called on all Michiganders to avoid dining and gathering indoors for the next two weeks.
“Support your local restaurants by eating outside or getting carryout instead of dining indoors. Opt for small outdoor gatherings with masks,” she said.
Whitmer added that the recommendations are not requirements or mandates and that a year into the pandemic, “we all know what works, and this has to be a team effort.”

Whitmer told reporters Wednesday that her husband traveled to their second home in the northern part of the state to “rake leaves” and “came right back home after.”
“When you opened regions six and eight, you advised people not to rush up and overwhelm the area… There were some reports that you did spend some time up north, is that true?” asked one reporter.
“My husband did go up to our place to rake some leaves and came home. He was there briefly for a night and came right back home after he raked our leaves!” said the Governor.
