Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday declared an end to Washington, D.C.’s sanctuary city era, ordering the immediate dismantling of policies that shield criminal aliens from federal immigration enforcement.
Bondi directed D.C. officials to scrap sanctuary rules and placed DEA Administrator Terrence C. Cole in charge of the Metropolitan Police to fight rising violent crime and restore public safety.
Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity, Bondi vowed the capital will no longer be a refuge for lawbreakers, pledging to restore order to a city she says has been overrun by progressive neglect.
“D.C. will not remain a sanctuary city actively shielding criminal aliens, will not happen. Under Donald Trump’s directive, D.C. will become safe again and it will become clean again. And I think what’s happening is it’s a combination of an extremely divisive city council,” Bondi told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
Bondi’s Thursday night order also overturned a Metropolitan Police directive issued just hours earlier that barred officers from arresting individuals solely on immigration warrants and limited the sharing of certain information with federal immigration authorities.
She blasted Washington, D.C.’s justice system—targeting liberal judges, lenient bail policies, and unchecked juvenile crime—while praising law enforcement officers ready to restore order alongside federal agents.
“You have liberal judges. You have no cash bail, as you said, you have juveniles running rampant over this city and you have a Metro police department, they want to do their jobs. And we have been out there for the last few nights with all of our federal agencies,” Bondi said.
Bondi detailed the results of the federal crackdown in D.C.
“Sean, they have been working so hard, working together. We’ve made 156 arrests. 27 firearms have been seized. Child pornographic material has been seized. Over 200 fentanyl pills taken off the street,” Bondi said.
