Even liberal Democrats and left-wing lawmakers thought House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s recent comments on President Trump’s immigration proposal had gone too far; with the former Speaker’s colleagues saying Pelosi crossed a line when she claimed Trump simply wants to “make America white again.”
Sen. Joe Manchin blasted Pelosi’s statement during an interview with CNN over the weekend, saying her heated “rhetoric” wasn’t helpful on “either side” of the political aisle.
“[We] don’t need that type of rhetoric on either side, from Nancy, (Speaker) Paul Ryan or anybody else,” said Manchin.
The former Speaker of the House raised eyebrows throughout Washington last week when she released an official statement that slammed Trump’s immigration outline; calling the DACA proposal a “cruel agenda.”
“[The] recent announcements to end Temporary Protected Status for Central Americans and Haitians are both part of the same cruel agenda. They are part of the Trump administration’s unmistakable campaign to make America white again,” wrote Pelosi.
The President’s revised immigration blueprint provides a pathway to citizenship for over 1.8 million ‘Dreamers,’ but also demands billions in federal spending for his signature campaign promise: the border wall.
Pelosi Says ‘God Is With’ Democrats on DACA
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi believes liberal lawmakers have the moral high ground on the ongoing immigration debate in the United States, strangely suggesting that “God is with” the Democratic Party regarding DACA and Dreamers.
The House Minority Leader was addressing reporters on Thursday when she was asked if she’d be willing to accept border wall funding or a crackdown on illegal immigration to reach a deal with President Trump on DACA.
“Have you changed your mind at all about being willing to accept some border wall funding or immigration crackdown funding within a DREAM Act fix?” asked one journalist.
“We’ve said to the president the night he agreed to the DACA legislation that we have a responsibility to protect our border, and we find — think are many things we can do working together to do that. And members have been working in a bipartisan way to address that,” said Pelosi.
“But I’m optimistic. I always have been. God is with us on this. Our country is great. We know their greatness springs from the vitality that newcomers bring to our country. 80 percent at least of the American people support the DREAMers,” she added.

IMMIGRATION SHOWDOWN: White House Unveils Official BORDER WALL, DACA Plan
The White House officially unveiled the framework of its highly-anticipated immigration reform plan this week, offering a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million ‘Dreamers’ in exchange for $25 billion in funding for the President’s signature campaign promise: The border wall.
According to Reuters, President Trump plans to promote the overhaul next week, touting the benefits of a physical barrier along the US-Mexico border, ending “chain migration” and the visa lottery, as well as finding a permanent solution to DACA.
During an impromptu press conference Wednesday night, Trump sent a re-assuring message to those who were brought to the United States illegally as young children, commonly known as ‘Dreamers,’ saying they “should not be concerned.”
“Tell them not to be concerned, ok? Tell them not to worry. We’re going to solve the problem. It’s up to the Democrats, but they should not be concerned,” said the President.
GOP Senator Lindsey Graham threw his full support behind the President’s immigration overhaul, adding he was hopeful that Republican and Democrats could come together behind the proposal.
“President Trump’s support for a pathway to citizenship will help us get strong border security measures as we work to modernize a broken immigration system,” said Graham. “With this strong statement by President Trump, I have never felt better about our chances of finding a solution on immigration.”
