The Department of Justice on Tuesday named nearly three dozen cities and states as sanctuary jurisdictions and warned of pending legal action against more.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the mostly left-leaning areas have immigration policies that “impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design.”
“The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country,” Bondi said.
Four of the 13 states on the DOJ’s list — California, New York, Colorado, and Illinois — have already faced lawsuits over their immigration policies. Others named include Delaware, Nevada, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.
The Illinois case is the furthest along and, so far, hasn’t gone the DOJ’s way. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, ruling that the Constitution protects Illinois’ policies and that the DOJ overstepped by infringing on state sovereignty. The DOJ can still appeal or revise its complaint.
Still, the Trump-era DOJ has seen some success as it ramps up its focus on immigration enforcement.
The DOJ’s pressure campaign has already yielded results in Louisville, Kentucky, where the mayor revised the city’s policy to better align with federal immigration efforts. A DOJ spokesperson said the list is meant to push other jurisdictions to follow suit.
“This is a chance for these jurisdictions to come to the table and work with us to keep Americans safe,” the spokesperson said.
