Augusta University nursing student Laken Riley was not killed by an “Athens man.”
X owner and world’s richest man Elon Musk called out media outlet The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for referring to the illegal immigrant who killed nursing student Laken Riley in Georgia as an “Athens man.” Jose Antonio Ibarra, Riley’s killer, was an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.
“Why did you lie to the people by calling an illegal from Venezuela an ‘Athens man,'” Musk replied to AJC’s story about the horrific event.

Similarly, Fox News contributor Joe Concha commented on the story, saying “This ‘Athens man’ entered the country illegally from Venezuela, AJC. Based on the attention this post is getting, you’re really going to want to change this portrayal.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was also fact-checked by community notes: “Not an ‘Athens man.’ He is an illegal Immigrant,” the note read.
Peach State Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also blasted the media outlet, saying “ILLEGAL ALIEN from Venezuela that the Biden admin let in our country. NOT ‘Athens Man.'”
