MISSING DEMOCRATS: McCarthy Blasts Absent Lawmakers, Says Constitution ‘Requires In-Person’ Voting

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.28.20

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy ripped his liberal colleagues Thursday over their decision to pursue “proxy voting,” saying the US Constitution clearly “requires in-person assembly.”

“If you hang your hat on ‘the House can make their own rules,’ then why don’t you make a rule that Republicans can’t vote? Why don’t make a rule that women can’t vote?” asked McCarthy. “The constitution requires in-person assembly.”

McCarthy confirmed this week that Congressional Republicans have filed a lawsuit to stop Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “unconstitutional proxy voting scheme” during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“I just filed a lawsuit in federal court to overturn Speaker Pelosi’s unconstitutional proxy voting scheme. It could allow as few as 20 Representatives to control the votes of 220. This is NOT the representative democracy our Founders envisioned or what our Constitution allows,” posted McCarthy on Twitter.

“This week, House Democrats will break over 230 years of precedent and allow Members of Congress to vote by proxy on the House floor,” McCarthy wrote in a separate statement. “This is not simply arcane parliamentary procedure. It is a brazen violation of the Constitution, a dereliction of our duty as elected officials, and would silence the American people’s voice during a crisis.”

BREAKING: House to Hold First Ever ‘Proxy Vote’ Since Congress First Met in 1789, GOP Sues to Stop

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.27.20

The House of Representatives is poised to hold their first “proxy vote” since the founding of the institution back in 1789, with Republican lawmakers suing to stop the “unconstitutional” maneuver.

“The unprecedented vote is expected to occur later Wednesday in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic after House Democrats passed May 15 a temporary resolution to allow absent members to still cast votes in an effort to stop the spread of the virus and protect public health,” reports Fox News.

“Meantime, House Republicans marked the occasion by filing a lawsuit against Democrats, claiming the proxy voting plan is unconstitutional and argued any vote cast by proxy should never become law,” adds Fox.

“Today is a sad day that we have got to be in the position where we’re bringing suit against the speaker,” Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said earlier Wednesday. “We’re bringing suit against the Democrats in order to prevent them from pushing this proxy vote through.”

“The House made its will clear two weeks ago when it voted to implement remote voting by proxy and other necessary measures to ensure that Congress can continue to protect lives and livelihoods,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “The House’s position that remote voting by proxy during a pandemic is fully consistent with the Constitution is supported by expert legal analyses.”
