MINNEAPOLIS JUDGE: Maxine Waters’ Comments ‘May Result in This Whole Trial Being Overturned’

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., appeared to shake off comments by the judge in the Derek Chauvin murder trial who said her “confrontational” remarks during a weekend protest in Minnesota could result in “this whole trial being overturned.”

Judge Peter Cahill was asked by Eric Nelson, the defense attorney, to declare a mistrial due to prosecutorial misconduct and Waters’ comments at a Brooklyn Center protest on Saturday night.

She was asked about the Chauvin case and told reporters if the former police officer is not found guilty of murder, “We’ve got to stay on the street and we’ve got to get more active, we’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business.”

 

Nelson told the court that there is a “high probability” that jurors will see Waters’ comments. Cahill denied the request.

“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” Cahill said.

Cahill called it “disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch” for elected officials to comment on the outcome of the case.

“Their failure to do so, I think, is abhorrent, he said. “But I don’t think it has prejudiced us with additional material that would prejudice this jury. They have been told not to watch the news. I trust they are following those instructions.”

Waters was asked about the judge’s comment on Monday and said, “The judge says my words don’t matter.”

Her office did not immediately respond to an after-hours email from Fox News seeking comment.

Waters has been criticized by Republicans who called her comment reckless. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took to Twitter on Sunday, saying, “Democrats actively encouraging riots & violence,” Cruz tweeted with a link to a story about the California Democrat’s comments. “They want to tear us apart.”

Closing arguments are now underway in the Minneapolis trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with second-degree murder in the death of George Floyd.

“Floyd’s death, and the shocking video of the events leading up to it, caused national and global outrage. Now there are fears of unrest if Chauvin is acquitted — an outcome that Black Americans, in particular, would see as evidence of a system egregiously biased against them,” reports The Hill.

 

 

“The Chauvin verdict is set to play out against the backdrop of the deaths of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minn., just 11 miles from the site of Floyd’s death; and of Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old, in Chicago,” adds the outlet.

ILHAN OMAR: Minneapolis Police Department ‘Beyond Reform, It’s Time to Disband Them!’

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar stunned residents of Minneapolis Friday; saying the police department is “beyond reform” and most be “disbanded and reimagined for public safety.”

“The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform. It’s time to disband them and reimagine public safety in Minneapolis,” posted Omar on social media.

 

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s charge will be upgraded to 2nd Degree Murder Wednesday, according to Fox News and other sources, adding the other 3 officers who were present during George Floyd’s death will also be charged.

“Chauvin will now be charged with second-degree murder, The Star Tribune first reported. The other three officers involved — Thomas Lane, J.A. Kueng and Tou Thao – will be charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder,” reports Fox News.

“We expect all of the police officers to be arrested before we have the memorial here in Minneapolis tomorrow. Because we cannot have two justice systems in America – one for black America, one for white America. We must have equal justice for the United States of America,” said the attorney for the Floyd family.
