Even in protest, Portland found a way to make a statement — and keep it weird.
Demonstrators in Portland stripped down Sunday to pedal through the streets — wearing nothing or next to it — in an “emergency” edition of the World Naked Bike Ride, turning the city’s irreverent streak into a political statement against the Trump administration.
Crowds have gathered daily outside Oregon’s immigration facility, mixing absurdity with defiance. Protesters donned inflatable frog, unicorn, axolotl, and banana costumes as they faced off with federal law enforcement deploying tear gas and pepper balls.
The annual nude ride typically takes place in summer, but organizers said another was needed to protest President Donald Trump’s plan to mobilize the National Guard to contain unrest.
Rider Janene King called it a “quintessentially Portland way to protest.”
The 51-year-old rode naked except for wool socks, a wig, and a hat, sipping hot tea in steady rain and 50-degree weather.
“We definitely do not want troops coming into our city,” King said.
Cyclists wound through the streets toward the city’s ICE building, where authorities warned them to remain on sidewalks or risk arrest — a warning that seemingly went ignored in other parts of the city, as the cyclists staged a “die-in” on the Burnside Bridge.
The city now awaits a ruling from an appeals court panel after a federal judge on Oct. 5 temporarily blocked Trump’s troop deployment order.
