Far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s mayoral race, securing what early projections describe as a mandate to advance his sweeping socialist agenda, according to preliminary results.
The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani, 34, roughly 40 minutes after polls closed, with several hundred thousand ballots still to be counted.
At around 9:40 p.m., Mamdani led with 50.4% of the vote, followed by Andrew Cuomo at 41.3%, while Republican Curtis Sliwa trailed with 7.5%. The projection was based on about 75% of votes counted.
Born in Uganda, Mamdani will be New York’s first Muslim and first socialist mayor, as well as one of the youngest ever to hold the office.
The state assemblyman’s rise from dark-horse candidate to mayor-elect came despite concerns over his youth, inexperience, and his “tax the rich” economic platform — a plan business leaders warned could drive jobs and investment out of the city.
A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Mamdani also faced criticism for his anti-police stance and past accusations of antisemitism tied to his sharp criticism of Israel.
