MARINES MOVE IN: Trump Sends 2,500 More Troops As Hormuz Showdown Looms

posted by Hannity Staff - 3.20.26

The U.S. is rapidly building military muscle in the Middle East; the stakes are global.

The Pentagon is deploying another 2,500 Marines toward Iran as President Donald Trump pushes to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint that can move markets overnight.

The San Diego-based USS Boxer amphibious assault ship, along with two supporting vessels carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is now sailing toward the region, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Associated Press.

A second expeditionary force is already on the move.

That group — led by the USS Tripoli — was spotted crossing the Strait of Malacca earlier this week and is expected to reach waters near Iran by the end of March.

Together, the deployments put roughly 5,000 Marines into position, with capabilities ranging from amphibious assaults to rapid-response ground operations.

The buildup is accelerating.

Trump has made clear he wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened — and he’s not ruling out force.

He said Thursday he has no immediate plans for boots on the ground, but added he wouldn’t telegraph military decisions in advance.

In a Friday interview with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum, Trump said he needs “numbers” to secure the waterway — after blasting NATO allies earlier in the day as “cowards” for refusing to help.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically vital shipping lanes, with a significant share of global oil flowing through the narrow corridor.

Any disruption sends shockwaves through energy markets.

Trump’s military playbook suggests this may be more than positioning.

Previous deployments — including dual carrier strike groups near Iran before the Feb. 28 offensive — preceded decisive action.

He also massed forces near Venezuela before ordering the Jan. 3 operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolas Maduro on U.S. charges.

Now, with two Marine expeditionary units converging near Iran, the pattern is familiar.

The options on the table are expanding.

Hannity’s Highlights

The U.S. is sending 5,000 Marines toward Iran — two expeditionary units are converging near the Strait of Hormuz as Trump pushes to reopen the key oil route.

The Strait of Hormuz is a global choke point — disruptions there can spike oil prices and shake markets worldwide almost instantly.

Trump isn’t ruling out force — he says he needs “numbers” to secure the strait and won’t telegraph whether boots on the ground are coming.

This buildup mirrors past pre-strike moves — similar deployments preceded major U.S. actions, raising the stakes for what happens next.

The Pentagon isn’t detailing the next move.

But the forces are in motion, the timeline is tightening, and the stakes are rising.

The question now isn’t whether the U.S. can reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

It’s how far Trump is willing to go to do it.
