Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested the recent crime surge sweeping New York City in recent weeks was a direct result of poor people “shoplifting bread” in order to feed their families due to high levels of unemployment.
“Do we think this has to do with the fact that there’s record unemployment in the United States right now?” she responded. “The fact that people are at a level of economic desperation that we have not seen since the Great Recession?”

Ocasio-Cortez ripped the White House’s use of a standard labor index this week; saying ‘Human Capital Stock’ is “an ugly term with an ugly history.”
