A judge has ruled that a new election will be held in November for a disputed Paterson City Council seat, just weeks after the race’s apparent winner and a sitting councilman were charged with voter fraud.
State Superior Court Judge Ernest Caposela issued his ruling Wednesday.
Alex Mendez had won a special election on May 12 to fill the seat, but claims of voter fraud were soon raised. An investigation was then launched after the U.S. Postal Service’s law enforcement arm told the state attorney general’s office about hundreds of mail-in ballots located in a mailbox in Paterson, along with more found in nearby Haledon.

The FBI’s Log Angeles Office confirmed Thursday that four men have admitted to their role in bribing homeless people with money and cigarettes to commit voter fraud using “false and forged signatures.”
“In a case announced by @LADAOffice & investigated by @FBILosAngeles @LAPDHQ, 4 men have admitted to their role in a scheme where money & cigarettes were offered to the homeless in exchange for false/forged signatures on ballot petitions & voter reg forms,” posted the FBI’s Twitter Account.

“Four more men were sentenced after admitting to their involvement in a large-scale scheme to bribe homeless people on Skid Row in exchange for forged signatures on ballot petitions and voter registration forms, prosecutors said Wednesday,” reports KTLA.
“The group allegedly gave homeless people $1 each and cigarettes in exchange for forgery. They amassed hundreds of false signatures to help initiatives qualify in the 2016 and 2018 election cycles, the DA’s office said,” adds the news channel.

Sitting Florida Governor and Senate candidate Rick Scott filed an “emergency motion” over the weekend; demanding local officials and law enforcement crackdown on potential “voter fraud” during the ongoing recount of last week’s midterm elections.
Scott announced the move on social media Sunday, writing “We’ve filed emergency motions and complaints in Broward and Palm Beach counties to ensure that we continue to do everything possible to prevent fraud and ensure this recount is operated responsibly.”
