Day one —in the books.
Nothing too surprising from President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson during the first day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearings. Jackson said she hopes her love of constitution and country will be evident once the week is up.
“During this hearing, I hope you will see how much I love this country, the Constitution, and the rights that make us free,” said Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson during her opening statement on Monday.
She also took time a thank her parents, who were in attendance.
“My parents taught me that unlike the many barriers they had to face growing up, my path was clearer, so that if I worked hard, and I believed in myself…I could do anything,” Judge Jackson says, thanking her parents in her opening statement. I love you Mom and Dad.”

Jackson got a preview from some Senators on the Committee as to what kinds of questions she can expect.
According to the Daily Wire, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) raised concerns last week that Jackson’s record demonstrates that she “has a pattern of letting child porn offenders off the hook for their appalling crimes.”
“Hawley promised during his opening statements that he is not trying to trap Jackson with any ‘gotcha’ questions, emphasizing that ‘she deserves a chance’ to talk about her record.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) homed in on progressivism and Jackson’s lack of “judicial philosophy.”
I was concerned during our conversation earlier this month when you told me that you really didn’t have a judicial philosophy,” Blackburn said. “The American people deserve a Supreme Court justice with a documented commitment to the text of the Constitution and the rule of law, not a judicial activist who will attempt to make policy from the bench.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) took a thinly-veiled shot at Democrats from past hearings, assuring Judge Jackson that this hearing would be different.
“Judge Jackson, I can assure you your hearing will feature none of that disgraceful [Kavanaugh hearing] behavior. No one is going to inquire into your teenage dating habits. No one is going to ask you with mock severity, do you like beer?” Cruz said.

Democrats hope to have Jackson confirmed by Easter. Previous Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Neil Gorsuch took 30 days, 89 days, and 66 days respectively.
