HIT LIST?: Israel Warns U.S. of Alleged New Iranian Plot to Kill Trump: WSJ

President Donald Trump is once again at the center of an alleged Iranian assassination threat after Israel reportedly passed fresh intelligence to U.S. officials about a new plot targeting the president.

According to a report published Thursday by The Wall Street Journal, Israeli intelligence recently alerted the United States to an alleged Iranian plan to assassinate Trump. The report did not include specific details about the purported plot, and CNN reported that U.S. officials had not previously been tracking the alleged threat before receiving Israel’s warning. The intelligence has not yet been independently vetted, according to the network.

The reported threat comes against the backdrop of years of public and private threats from Iranian officials and affiliates seeking revenge for the 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Qasem Soleimani during Trump’s first term.

Asked about the report, the White House pointed reporters to Trump’s own remarks Wednesday during the NATO summit in Ankara, where the president acknowledged he believes Iran has him squarely in its crosshairs.

“They want to take out the U.S. leader — me,” Trump said. “I’m on whatever list. I saw this morning I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn’t last very long.”

Trump then blasted Iran’s ruling regime in unusually stark terms.

“These are evil, sick people,” he said. “And we have to root out that cancer. That cancer. You know what you do? You’ve got to cut out cancer early. And that’s the way I feel.”

The security concerns may have extended beyond rhetoric.

Trump traveled to Turkey aboard the new Qatari aircraft that has been dubbed the administration’s “palace in the sky,” but returned to Washington aboard a different Air Force One. The White House later described the last-minute aircraft change as a deliberate security “distraction” designed to complicate any potential threat against the president.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also reportedly saw his planned trip to Israel canceled shortly before Trump’s return flight. It remains unclear whether that decision was connected to the same intelligence or whether any alleged threat extended beyond the president.

The reported warning also arrives during a period of noticeable friction between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite their longstanding alliance.

Earlier this month, Trump acknowledged sharply criticizing Netanyahu over Israeli military operations in Lebanon, confirming reports that he warned the Israeli leader he was escalating regional tensions.

According to one U.S. official’s account of the conversation, Trump told Netanyahu: “You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”

Trump later confirmed the substance of those remarks to the New York Post.

At this point, however, the alleged assassination intelligence remains limited. Neither Israeli nor U.S. officials have publicly released evidence supporting the reported plot, and U.S. officials are still evaluating the information.
