Earlier today, Lt. Governor Winsome Sears (R-VA) made history, presiding over the Virginia Senate as the first woman to serve as lieutenant governor and the first black woman to hold statewide office.

Governor Glenn Youngkin shared the moment on Twitter:

“Virginia created history today. Lt. Governor Winsome Sears presided over the Senate as the first black woman to do so in Virginia’s history. I am honored to have a strong, courageous, and bold leader by my side @WinsomeSears.”

“I am proof we are progressing. I am an immigrant and in the former capital of the Confederacy; I’m second in command of eight-point some million people.
