A new California poll is sending shockwaves through the state’s political establishment — and giving Republicans hope that the once-unthinkable may suddenly be possible in deep-blue America.
Fresh polling from Kreate Strategies shows independent voters in California increasingly breaking toward Republican candidates in key statewide races, signaling a potential major political realignment heading into November.
In the crowded governor’s race, conservative commentator and businessman Steve Hilton led among independent voters with 22%, narrowly edging out Democrat Xavier Becerra at 20% under California’s top-two primary system.
Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco also posted a notable 13% showing, further underscoring the growing GOP strength among no-party-preference voters.
Kreate Strategies said the survey was independently conducted and not commissioned by any campaign or outside political organization.
The numbers point to a potentially massive shift in California politics.
Independent voters now make up one of the fastest-growing blocs in the state and officially outnumber registered Republicans. For decades, Democrats relied heavily on those unaffiliated voters drifting left in statewide contests.
But that pattern may be breaking down.
The poll suggests independents frustrated by soaring housing costs, crime concerns, homelessness, energy prices, and years of one-party Democratic control in Sacramento are increasingly willing to consider Republican candidates promising a more pragmatic approach.
Hilton, who has campaigned heavily on affordability, public safety, and government accountability, gained four points in the latest survey while several Democratic candidates either stagnated or slipped backward.
The movement has fueled growing optimism among California Republicans, who have spent years largely locked out of statewide power.
Under California’s unique top-two primary system, all candidates compete on the same ballot regardless of party, with the top two finishers advancing to the general election. That structure has often favored Democrats in recent cycles due to overwhelming registration advantages.
But if independents continue trending Republican, political analysts say GOP candidates could suddenly become competitive in races that were once considered automatic Democratic wins.
The implications extend far beyond the governor’s mansion.
A sustained shift among independents could reshape congressional contests, legislative races, ballot initiatives, and local elections across the state.
