Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to reach the necessary 218 votes on the 4th Speaker of the House ballot on Wednesday afternoon. Texas Rep. Chip Roy and the House Freedom Caucus nominated Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) who siphoned off the necessary votes for McCarthy to reach his goal.
Democrats again nominated Hakeem Jeffries.
Earlier today, former President Donald Trump urged the GOP to vote for McCarthy; Trump shared the message on TRUTH Social.
“Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA,THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE ‘HOUSE’ TWICE! REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!”
Despite words from the former president, the Freedom Caucus hasn’t budged.
