It sounds like Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy will have a difficult time convincing members of the House Freedom Caucus to see the debt deal his way.
Texas Rep. Chip Roy and his fellow Freedom Caucus members reacted to the McCarthy-Biden debt deal on Tuesday, emphasizing that no Republican should vote for the bill.
“No one sent us here to borrow an additional $4 trillion to get absolutely nothing in return,” Roy told reporters during a press conference with his caucus. “There’s a reason our Democrat colleagues support this. There’s a reason that Mitt Romney supports this. There’s a reason that Bill Kristol supports this.”

“Washington is lying again,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) said. “This bill has no cap in raising the debt. Just a date in the future. We have no idea what that number’s going to look like.”
“It’s not just that every Republican should vote against this,” Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) said, “This is a career-defining vote for every Republican.”
“The debt ceiling deal is classic Washington DC swamp garbage,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) tweeted. “This Congress promised to be different. Supporting this deal is stabbing the American people directly in the back.”
From Just The News:
One of the biggest GOP complaints about the deal is that it cuts some funding for the Internal Revenue Service but it still allocates billions of additional dollars to the agency. Another concern is that the deal does not cut spending back to pre-COVID-19 levels.
Freedom Caucus Republicans are also reportedly threatening McCarthy’s speakership, which he only won in January after 15 rounds of voting. The historic number of rounds was largely due to dissenting votes from caucus members.
Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) reportedly floated forcing a vote to remove McCarthy during a Freedom Caucus call Monday evening, NBC News reported citing two sources familiar with the call.
