President Biden called for the creation of a commission to study the expansion of the US Supreme Court Friday; reversing his previous position for decades when he described the maneuver as a “corrupt power grab.”
“FDR had a Congress made up of solid New Dealers. In this environment, Roosevelt unveiled his court-packing plan. He wanted to increase the number of judges up to 15. It took the courage of his own party to stand up against this power grab,” said Biden in 2005.

The Biden Administration will establish a new panel to study the “expansion” of the United States Supreme Court; a potential first-step in adding more justices to the highest court in the country.
“The commission will also examine other potential changes such as term limits for justices. Progressives are pushing President Biden to add seats to balance the court’s conservative majority,” reports the New York Times.

“It is not clear that the commission established by Mr. Biden will by itself clarify his position. Under the White House order establishing it, the commission is not set to issue specific recommendations at the end of its study — an outcome that is likely to disappoint activists,” adds the newspaper.
